Visual pleasure from the word go. I saw his ‘time of the gypsies’ many years ago while in University. I appreciated the rawness and sheer honesty with which he portrays his characters. There is such grand contrasts between the 3 generations: The weather beaten wisdom and instinct of the old folks, the saturated greed and flamboyant folly of the middle agers and the very freshness, purity and focus of the young ones. Kusturica beautifully captured the Eastern European light (along the banks of the Danube) and again contrasts it so beautifully against the drama of the interiors in order to portray his folklore.
